Healthy Eating

Proper nutrition along with exercise is the key to a healthy life. I know how difficult it can be to follow a nutrition plan with the very busy lifestyles we all seem to have. I hope to offer some practical ways to eat healthy as well as share some nutrition information I have come across in my own quest to improve my own health. Eating healthy is crucial to staying well and feeling great but it is also very individual. Every diet or nutrition plan does not necessarily fit every person and may need to be customized based on one’s own physiological needs. It is always advisable to discuss the options with your family physician before starting any new health or exercise regime.

Optimal Nutrition

In order to function at an optimal level, our bodies require an adequate supply of nutrients. The human body needs to maintain homeostasis or a self-regulated state which is stable and adaptable in order to thrive. In order to reach this level of dynamic equilibrium, the body must have a steady supply of nutrients in order to maintain balance and avoid illness. Every system in the body can be affected by an imbalance or lack of necessary raw materials from the digestive system to the nervous system a lack of proper nutrients can cause illness as the body adapts to provide balance and protect vital organ function. One example of this would be the development of osteoporosis as a result of a diet low in calcium and magnesium, the body needs calcium to maintain a normal heart beat, coagulate blood, transmit nerve impulses, activate enzyme reactions and stimulate hormone secretions if the calcium is unavailable from the diet the body will obtain calcium from the bones. The homeostasis of every body system can be affected by the level of nutrition provided.

The best way to lose weight

The first step when beginning a new diet is to find one that is right for you. Diets are not all one size fits all, your diet needs to address your individual nutritional needs and be designed to help you reach your goals. It is always ideal to meet with your family physician and discuss your current health and goals before beginning a new nutritional plan. It is a good idea to write down any questions or concerns you have so you don’t forget to discuss them. Make sure you tell your Dr. about any supplements or vitamins you are taking too. Many people are having great results with the low carb/ high protein diet and the science behind this type of diet plan is very sound. Continue reading The best way to lose weight

My mission

My mission is to provide up to date practical information in the areas of nutrition, weight loss and fitness based on my own personal research and experiences. I have worked in food service for over 30 years and I have studied health, human physiology and epidemiology. I have done a great deal of research in these fields not only as an academic but for personal reasons as well. I have helped many find a nutritional plan that works and I hope to share that information with my readers. My most current project is to find a workable diet and exercise plan for those with Hashimotos, I will be posting my findings (and results) soon. My personal goal is to get an indepth understanding of the low glycemic diet, as blood sugar levels have an affect on many systems.
